Definition #

Digital transformation is coordinated change to how an organization creates value, serves people, operates, and makes decisions. Technology enables the change, but buying or replacing technology is not the transformation on its own.

A useful distinction #

  • Digitization converts information from physical to digital form.
  • Digitalization uses digital technology to improve an existing process.
  • Digital transformation changes the operating model, the value proposition, or the way the organization decides and learns.

The leadership question #

Ask what must become measurably different for customers, employees, partners, or the economics of the organization. If the answer describes only a system installation, the intended transformation is still missing.
